Guidelines for Pedagogy Course Credit For Academic Student Employees (ASE)An academic unit may require a student to enroll in and successfully complete a course of pedagogy as a condition of employment as an Academic Student Employee (ASE). Such courses earn academic credit and go through a curricular review just like that for other graduate courses (at the departmental, college or school, and university level) in the process of their adoption and approval. Part or all of the coursework provided in these courses may be offered in the time period immediately preceding the start of an academic quarter. The coursework may continue through subsequent quarters. Some examples of existing departmental courses specifically focused on pedagogy are:
In some cases, departmental special topics courses (when focused on pedagogy) or selected Graduate School courses may be used. Examples of these are:
Course-specific activities should be considered part of the ASE’s normal quarterly workload. The following types of activities are also not considered pedagogy and do not receive course credit: distribution of teaching materials, building tours, assignment of offices and keys, training in the use of equipment, and safety instruction.
