"HOW TO" INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS 

Scheduling a Doctoral General Examination (Admission to Candidacy)

WARNING:  Departments may have additional requirements.  Please consult with your department regarding all procedures.

  1. Contact your department regarding your eligibility to schedule a General Examination.
  2. Complete a Request for General Examination* form.
  3. Acquire all supervisory committee members (including GSR) signatures.  E-mail and/or faxed signatures, if attached to the request form, are accepted.
  4. Submit the request form to the Graduate School at least 3 weeks prior to the examination.
  5. The Graduate School will determine if you have met the minimum requirements and, if approved, a warrant will be sent to your department's Graduate Program Assistant/Advisor one week prior to the examination.

Scheduling a Doctoral Final Examination

WARNING:  Departments may have additional requirements.  Please consult with your department regarding all procedures.

  1. Contact your department regarding your eligibility to schedule a Final Examination.
  2. Ensure that the Reading Committee has read an entire draft of your dissertation.
  3. Complete a Request for Final Examination* form.
  4. Acquire all supervisory committee members (including GSR) signatures.  E-mail and/or faxed signatures, if attached to the request form, are accepted.
  5. Submit the request form to the Graduate School at least 3 weeks prior to the examination.
  6. The Graduate School will determine if you have met the minimum requirements and, if approved, a warrant will be sent to your department's Graduate Program Assistant/Advisor one week prior to the examination.

Waive Graduate School Requirements by Petition

To request a waiver for any Graduate School requirement:

  1. Contact your department to verify departmental policy/procedure.
  2. Complete and sign the upper section of the Petition to the Dean* form, attaching any supporting documents.
  3. Your department's Graduate Program Coordinator (faculty advisor) must complete and sign the middle section of the Petition to the Dean form.
  4. Submit the petition to the Graduate School.  Petitions will be processed approximately one week after received, though petition processing may take longer at the beginning and/or end of the quarter.
  5. The Graduate School will mail the reviewed petition to the student at the address listed on the petition and to the student's department.

*The Petition to the Dean form should be available at your department or the Graduate School (G1 Communications).
