Q: What kinds of projects are appropriate?
A: Projects should be student-centered--the
student develops an idea and finds a faculty teaching mentor as a collaborator.
This fellowship is not intended as an opportunity for a faculty member to engage
in a project of his or her own devising for which a teaching assistant is
needed.
Q: What activities are possible during the
course of the fellowship?
A: Some possible activities include
development of active learning strategies; creation of new ways of assessing
student mastery of subject matter; participation in a departmental curriculum
development project; creation of electronic teaching resources; development of
modules that present concepts in new ways; development of a new course; creation
of new sets of experiments that extend learning opportunities in the lab in new
directions or use new media; revising an existing course, etc. The
possibilities are only limited by the creativity of the proposers.
Q. What should I consider
when selecting a mentor?
A. First of all, think
of individuals who are reflective practitioners who can help you become a better
teacher. Finding someone with enough time to give to the project is also
important. In general, research shows that graduate students benefit from
interacting with multiple mentors. Therefore, you might want to consider
choosing a teaching mentor who is not your primary research advisor or a mentor
from another kind of institution located nearby. Q: Must a student be a PDTA2 to be eligible?
A: No. That is the level of dollars that
will be provided as a stipend. However, experience shows that more advanced
students who have already done some teaching often display the best preparation
for this fellowship opportunity.
Q: May the award be shared by several
students?
A: No. It is not possible to divide the
tuition and insurance components of the award.
Q: May the award be used over more than one
quarter?
A: No. It is not possible to divide the
tuition and insurance components of the award.
Q: May I hold the fellowship while I am a TA
or RA?
A: No. The intent of the award is for you
to focus your energies on the project proposed.
Q: May I use the award after I graduate?
A: No. You must be registered as a
full-time student while you are using the award.
Q: May a mentor agree to work with more than
one Huckabay applicant?
A: No. A mentor may agree to work with only
one Huckabay applicant.
Q: Where can I view previous successful
applications?
