Jane Jacobs and Rachel Carson: The Death and Life of Nature and the City

In 1961-62, two little-known women published books which attacked the orthodoxy of their respective fields. At the time they appeared to belong to two very different debates: urbanism for Jacobs, environmentalism for Carson. Today we can see that they in fact shared an important new theoretical perspective that not only revolutionized their own fields but has now become fundamental to our understanding of sustainability. This shared perspective begins from a belief in what Jacobs called 'close-grained diversity' and a passionate rejection of policies that violated this complexity. Jacobs and Carson point towards a 'new regionalism' that encompasses city and countryside.

Professor Fishman is the Emil Lorch Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. He is a nationally recognized expert in the areas of urban history and urban policy and planning.
