VISITING GRADUATE STUDENTS
Admission Requirements
An applicant who wishes to enroll in the Graduate School at the University of Washington as a Visiting Graduate Student, must be in good standing and actively pursuing a graduate degree at another accredited academic institution. A Visiting Graduate Student plans to transfer a limited number of graduate credits taken at the UW back to the home institution.
It is not possible for a Visiting Graduate Student to earn a graduate degree from the University of
Washington as the status allows temporary residence in the Graduate School.
Admission to the University of Washington as a Visiting Graduate Student does not guarantee admission to any particular course of study.
A Visiting Graduate wishing to receive a graduate degree from the University of Washington must first apply for regular graduate student status with another Application for Admission to the Graduate School and submit complete credentials.
If admission is granted, after registration, a petition may be submitted to the Dean of the Graduate School to apply credits taken as a Visiting Graduate Student toward a degree.
A Visiting Graduate Student will be permitted to register only in those
courses for which the student is judged to be eligible by an advisor or the
instructor of the course, and if space is available to accommodate registration.
Registration in courses will be permitted on a space-available basis only.
Length of enrollment as a Visiting Graduate is determined by the number of
quarters approved by the department of interest.

Departmental Database Access
Accessing the Name Exchange Database
Utilizing the Name Exchange Database
About the National and Western Name Exchanges
Dear Deans, directors, chairs, Graduate Program Coordinators, and Graduate
Program Assistants:
In my discussions with you, one challenge frequently voiced by departments and
programs is the difficulty they face in the
recruitment of diverse graduate students. To that end, The Graduate School would
like to make you aware of a valuable, newly developed recruitment tool that will
facilitate the outreach to and recruitment of underrepresented and minority
undergraduates interested in pursuing graduate degrees. We hope that by
utilizing the Name Exchange Database's new "Rapid Response" feature, departments
can enhance their efforts to increase the numbers of underrepresented graduate
students at the University of Washington.
As you might already be aware, the UW is a member of both the
National and the
Western Name Exchanges. These consortia, comprising approximately fifty major
universities across the country, collect and distribute among them the names of
ethnic minority students interested in graduate and professional study. We would
like to encourage UW departments and graduate programs to access the NNE and WNE
database in their efforts to recruit low-income, first-generation, and minority
students to our campus.
The Name Exchange Database's new "Rapid Response" feature facilitates the timely
and immediate dissemination of prospective student contact information to
departments, so that GPA's or GPC's may email or phone these students as soon as
they have registered in the database. Alternately, departments may also review
student information, deciding which students meet a particular unit's admissions
requirements, allowing departments to strategically contact only those students
on whom they would like to concentrate their recruitment efforts.
We look forward to working with departments to increase the numbers of
underrepresented graduate students on this campus. If you have questions, please
contact The Graduate School's Graduate Opportunities & Minority Achievement
Program (GO-MAP) c/o 3-9016 or gomap@u.washington.edu.
With kindest regards,
Suzanne T. Ortega
Vice Provost and Dean, The Graduate School

Associate Dean, The Graduate School
To access the Name Exchange data, department heads first should designate one or two faculty or staff members to have access to the Name Exchange database. The departmental representatives will need an invitation code to establish a departmental account. (Departmental representative should contact The Graduate School's GO-MAP office c/o 3-9016 or gomap@u.washington.edu to receive this invitation code). Departmental representatives can then establish a departmental Name Exchange account at http://www.grad.washington.edu/exchrde/dept/default.asp.
After establishing a departmental Name Exchange account, departments can choose one of two ways to receive student information:
1) Via the WWW: Departments may go to the Name Exchange website to view all students who've registered
at any given point.
Current 2007 student data is available in table form (either in MS Excel format, or HTML), so that
departments can sort or collate
students' data according to their particular needs or admissions
requirements. Departments may then use this data to contact students who have indicated
an interest in their academic area; generate rosters of potential graduate
students who you may wish to target for admissions to your department; or
immediately email these potential students as soon as you have been notified
that they have registered in the Name Exchange database. Because the data is
available in
MS Excel or HTML/table format, departments can manipulate and sort the data via
MS Word Mailmerge or in whatever manner they find most useful for recruitment purposes.

2) By email: Starting Winter Quarter 2007, departments may elect to receive each student's contact information (including major, GPA, undergraduate institution, etc.) in email form. This will be done automatically, as the Name Exchange database will generate an email informing you of a prospective student's interest in your program or department each time an individual student registers in the Name Exchange database:
