Financial
aid may be a critical factor determining how you will finance your
education. There are many forms of financial support you may be eligible for
as a graduate student. GO-MAP encourages you to begin your search early, and
to seek all possible funding options.
GETTING
STARTED
Do not wait until
you receive an admission decision to apply for financial aid. There are several funding options: government loans,
independent scholarships/fellowships, and campus/departmental merit and
need-based awards. The University of Washington's
Office of
Student Financial Aid is a good place to start researching your
options.
To be considered for need-based awards at the UW, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). You may apply on the web at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
The FAFSA should be filed no later than the established deadline of the
UW, which is usually the end of February.
Apply as soon as possible to maximize your chances
of receiving funding.
DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS & FINANCIAL SUPPORT
GO-MAP administers programs providing funding for students whose individual
experiences and/or academic interests will bring diversity to scholarly
perspectives and endeavors, and to the academic community.
The following awards
are based on merit, financial need, and diversity
and require a departmental nomination of the student's Graduate Program
Coordinator or departmental chair.
No individual student applications are
accepted.
Eligibility for GO-MAP Financial
Support:
All awards are contingent upon the student's
admission to the UW Graduate School.
PLEASE NOTE: Students in the following categories
are not eligible for GO-MAP support:
-
Students who
hold temporary or student visas (F-1, J-1);
-
are enrolled in professional
degree programs (Law [JD], Medicine [MD], Dentistry [DDS]);
-
are enrolled in or registered for
self-sustaining, fee-based, or "distance-learning" programs and credits (i.e.,
Evening
Degree programs, Extension programs, etc)
-
are enrolled in
foreign study, study abroad, or
international programs or exchanges.
If you are unsure of your
status, please check with your prospective degree program. Students in the
above categories might still be eligible for teaching assistantships and
research assistantships; please contact your prospective department for
more information about being considered. Students in the above categories
also are still eligible--and encouraged--to participate in GO-MAP's
lectures, events, workshops, etc.
Requesting GO-MAP Financial Support
Students do NOT apply directly to
GO-MAP for diversity fellowships and financial assistance; instead,
applicants must be nominated by their graduate program to our office. You
should ask your department's Graduate Program Coordinator to nominate you
for any financial assistance and tuition waivers for which you may qualify.
(Your department may contact us at 543-9016 or by email at
gomap@u.washington.edu if they
have questions about the nomination procedures.)
Deadlines
Deadlines vary from year to year, and GO-MAP
diversity fellowships have varying deadlines; however, call for nominations for GO-MAP
diversity fellowships usually go out mid-January to early-February, with a submission deadline of
late-February to mid-March.
For more information about the application and nomination process, current
year's deadline, etc.,
contact GO-MAP by email (gomap@u.washington.edu)
or telephone (206-543-9016, or toll free at 800-524-9122).
