Answering a request by UW student groups, then-President McCormick, the University of Washington Regents, student leaders, and UW administrators signed a Diversity Compact on October 21, 2000. They pledged to improve diversity on the UW campuses through 19 specific initiatives explained in the Diversity Compact. If you want to be involved in diversity issues on campus or are interested in programs with minority graduate outreach programs, see the links below. We also have included a list of community organizations that may be of interest to you.

Academic Resources

• Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR)- provides services for UW departments, faculty, staff, and teaching assistants on a wide variety of topics related to the improvement and assessment of teaching and learning.  CIDR offers grad school courses on TA preparation.  

• Center for Multicultural Education

• Center for Social Science Computation and Research (CSSR) - offers free computer skills class for all UW students/staff

• The Curriculum Transformation Project:   The Curriculum Transformation Project's mission is to assist both individual faculty and academic departments with curriculum change related to gender and cultural pluralism.

• UW Diversity Research Institute:  The Diversity Research Institute’s goals are to create and support a community of scholars at the University of Washington and to generate new, interdisciplinary knowledge about diversity and institutional transformation.

• Native Voices Graduate Program for Documentary Filmmaking

• Re-envisioning the Ph.D. Project:  Funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, it posed the challenging question: "How can we re-envision the Ph.D. to meet the needs of the society of the 21st Century?"

• Center for the Advancement of Health Disparities Research (Schools of Nursing, U Hawaii at Manoa & UW) - The purpose of the Center for the Advancement of Health Disparities Research (CAHDR) is to participate in and provide leadership to research-based innovations that will reduce health disparities among and within population groups.

• Summer Medical Education Program - A 6-week national academic enrichment program for premed students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds or who have a commitment to work with underserved populations. Also eligible are students from rural, underserved or underrepresented backgrounds.

• Diversity Digest is a periodical published by the Association of American Colleges & Universities.  It is specifically designed to illuminate the scope, accomplishments, and educational value of the campus diversity movement; and to help practitioners learn to effectively articulate and communicate the education value and success of their local diversity initiatives.
