What is GO-MAP?

As a unit of the UW Graduate School, the Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP), is committed to serving the needs of students of color and students from other underrepresented groups, while simultaneously fostering an educational and social environment in which all students can learn and develop through experiences rich in cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity. GO-MAP’s three main areas of focus are:

  • Outreach, recruitment, and retention
  • Enhancing scholarship and research
  • Building community, on and off campus

The Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program, or GO-MAP, has been an integral part of the University of Washington for over 40 years, taking very seriously our efforts to establish and maintain campus, local, national, and international networks for students in our program. Members of our staff work closely with faculty, staff, and graduate students currently on campus to enhance academic and funding opportunities and to encourage scholarship and research that explores and supports cultural diversity.

GO-MAP has two advisory boards that work independently and jointly: the Student Advisory Board and the Faculty/Staff Advisory Board. These boards are key to the success of our signature events: the fall GO-MAP new student orientation, Getting Connected; the spring campus visit for accepted students, Prospective Student Days; the Voices in Academia Lunch Series; the Diversity Book Talk Series; and the Mangels Lecture Series. With generous support from the Offices of the President and Provost, GO-MAP sponsors interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary student-initiated symposia, campus opportunities, and community events to help interested students connect with each other and build community.

Our nationally and internationally renowned faculty provide graduate education and mentoring through more than one hundred graduate programs for careers in the humanities, social sciences, arts, education, the professions, the natural sciences, technology, and medicine. We invite you to become part of our campus community as graduate scholars preparing for rewarding life work rooted in diverse intellectual engagement and experience.

The Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement (GO-MAP) is located in suite 034 of the Graduate School, on the Ground Floor of the Communication Building. To view a map, please click on the image to the right.
