Executive Orders 28 and 30

Policy Governing Graduate Student Appointments

Executive Order 28 is the policy document which covers eligibility, selection and appointment procedures, conditions of service, grievance procedures, summer quarter policies and other matters relating to Graduate Student Service Appointees.

Executive Order 30 covers additional information for graduate fellows and trainees.

Each student who is offered an appointment should receive, from his or her employing department, a copy of Executive Order 28, in the University Handbook, Volume IV, Chapter 6, pp. 34-39.  The Executive Order is available in the on-line version of the University Handbook at

    http://www.washington.edu/faculty/facsenate/handbook/04-04-06.htm - Revised July, 2001

Executive Order 30 is available at http://www.washington.edu/faculty/facsenate/handbook/04-04-08.htm -Revised July, 2001. Graduate fellows and trainees should receive Executive Order 30, in addition to Executive Order 28.

Dean Marsha Landolt issued a memorandum on September 1, 2001 regarding important revisions to Executive Order 28.  There is also an explanation of the changes and the letter to be given to Graduate Student Service Appointees -Revised April, 2004.

It is important to remind a graduate student service appointee that he/she is required to carry 10 credit hours during each quarter in which he/she has an appointment.   (During summer quarter, the minimum requirement is 2 credits.)  Exceptions to this minimum credit load must be requested through a petition to the Dean of the Graduate School.  To obtain the Petition For Reduced Enrollment Form from the Office of Fellowships and Assistantships of the Graduate School, go to Graduate School Forms
