This calendar shows major graduate awards listed in order of their application deadlines.  Applications for most of the awards below are available to UW students only through the Fellowship and Assistantship Division.  See the right-hand column of the calendar for information on where to obtain applications.

Please note: 

  • These deadlines are not necessarily accurate outside of the University of Washington. Non-UW students should contact the funding organizations or their program advisors for their application rules.

  • Most applications are available one to two months prior to deadlines.  

  • We cannot mail applications off campus. 

  • We have applications available for University of Washington students only

Fulbright Study Abroad Fellowships – Grants for graduate study or research abroad and for training abroad in the creative and performing arts

U.S. citizens with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the beginning date of the grant; proficiency in the language of the host country. More information available from the Institute of International Education web site.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship – To assist students of superior ability to pursue graduate programs leading to the doctorate or the Master of Fine Arts in selected fields in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Students who at the time of application have not yet completed their first year of graduate study or will be entering graduate school in the upcoming academic year. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident (some accepted in the process of becoming citizen or permanent resident).

German Academic Exchange Service Fellowships (DAAD) - One-year scholarship for study or research at a University in Germany.
This deadline is for performing musician and fine arts applicants.

UW graduate students in all disciplines except medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy; U.S. citizenship, proficiency in German.  More information is available at DAAD’s web site .

Fanny & John Hertz Graduate Fellowships – To support graduate education of students of outstanding potential in the applied physical sciences.

U. S. citizenship; bachelor’s degree; accepted for graduate study in the physical sciences; 3.75-4.00 GPA.

National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships – Fellowships for graduate study in the sciences, engineering, and social sciences.

U.S. citizenship; at the time of application must not have completed post-baccalaureate study in excess of 30 quarter hours in any of the fields listed in the program description.

National Physical Sciences Consortium Graduate Fellowships in the Physical Sciences--up to six years of funding towards a graduate PhD.

NPSC welcomes applications from any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution. Special emphasis on underrepresented minorities and women.

Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship for those with degrees in a physical science (for example, physics, chemistry or astronomy) or engineering or mathematics and who want to teach high school physics, physical science and/or chemistry or mathematics

Check the Frequently Asked Questions at Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship website for all the eligibility requirements.

 

Applicants must have earned at least a bachelor's degree in a physical science, mathematics or engineering before the fellowship begins in June. In addition, candidates must enroll in a secondary teacher credential program before the fellowship is awarded.

Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships - Fellowships for advanced training in Canadian, East-, Central-, South-, and Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, Russian and Eastern European and Western European Area Studies.

For graduate students enrolled in a program of modern foreign language training in a language for which the institution has developed or is developing performance-based instruction.  Must be a citizen, national or permanent resident of the United States.

NSEP National Flagship Language Initiative (NFLI) Fellowship for students at the advanced level in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Korean and Russian language study.

two-year awards that provide support for all academic expenses directly associated with participation in a Flagship Language Program

U.S. citizenship, minimum of a Bachelor's degree (by the start of the program), a minimum current knowledge of a Flagship language at an Advanced Low, excellent skills in English, and strong commitment to seek long-term employment in an agency or office of the U.S. federal government involved in national security affairs.

Project for Interdisciplinary Pedagogy (PIP) provides an opportunity for diverse, highly motivated cohort of 4-6 University of Washington doctoral students to develop their teaching skills in the context of an integrative interdisciplinary program that spans the arts and sciences.

The John C. Flanagan Graduate Student Fellowship

For UW graduate students in the Social Sciences at the dissertation stage

Up to 2 awards for 12 months of support in 2008-09, in the amount of $25,000 each.

In addition, the
Graduate School will enhance the fellowship award by creating subventions to support the publication of dissertations by Flanagan fellowship recipients.  These grants are intended to help new scholars get their first volume into print.
