Creating and Modifying Programs

The Graduate School’s Office of Academic Affairs and Planning coordinates the processing of new graduate program proposals.

**There are three deadlines for the submission of new program proposals to the Graduate School each year: November 1, February 1, and May 1**

Proposals submitted before the above deadlines will receive a written response by the end of that quarter from the Office of Academic Affairs and Planning. This response will include a description of necessary revisions to the proposal and next steps in the process, including the type of review assigned and a preliminary timeline for the review.

After submission to the Graduate School, the Planning Notification of Intent (for new degrees) or the full proposal (for new graduate certificate programs) will be circulated to stakeholders at the University of Washington for a brief comment period. The program will then have the opportunity to integrate any comments into the final proposal.

New graduate program proposals are handled on a case by case basis. All new program proposals (degrees, certificates, and tracks/options/pathways) must follow the relevant guidelines found on this page. The Comparison Chart provides a brief overview of the process in each case. Site visits are generally not required for new program proposals.
