Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching invites doctoral-granting
departments to participate in the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID). This multi-year project seeks to ensure that doctoral education is the best
preparation for the next generation of disciplinary leaders by supporting departments’ efforts to purposefully structure their doctoral programs.
The project will work with disciplinary communities as well as selected departments in four fields of study: chemistry, education (educational psychology
and curriculum and instruction), English, and mathematics. (Next year history and neurosciences
departments will be added to the Initiative.)
Carnegie has selected its Partner and Allied departments in each discipline
for the project. These departments will commit to the goal of adapting doctoral education to the demands and needs of the new century by assessing current
practices and crafting an enriched vision.
