Teaching as an Intellectual Craft: The Virtual Workplace

Description

Teaching as an Intellectual Craft: The Virtual Workplace approach is employed by the Department of Microbiology. Teaching skills are an integral part not only of academia, but also of industry and government. Using a multi-level team approach, teaching assistants learn, in the context of an upper level undergraduate lecture-laboratory course, career skills fundamental to academic, industrial and government settings. In the course, undergraduate student teams develop laboratory protocols, research projects, and problem-solving strategies, and communicate them through oral presentations, electronic communications, and written reports that mimic scientific publications. The graduate teaching assistants learned how to work in the curriculum of the future. Through supervising, coaching, and evaluating student teams, they acquire skills applicable to many career environments.
