In collaboration with the
Faculty of Graduate Studies, University Teaching Services
and the Center for Higher Education Research and Development
offer a Certification Program in Higher Education Teaching
(CHET). The goal is to help academic departments prepare
Ph.D. students for a full range of faculty responsibilities,
as well as careers that stress presentation and
communication skills. CHET program requirements include
courses and workshops on teaching and learning,
participation in a teaching practicum in the form of TA
teaching or mentor-supervised teaching, and the preparation
of a teaching dossier and a curriculum vitae. The
requirements are designed to be flexible so as not to extend
students' time to completion or add unreasonable content to
existing graduate programs.
The objectives of the CHET
program are to: (1) introduce graduate students to the
theory, accumulated experience and knowledge of higher
education pedagogy, (2) give program participants the
opportunity to develop their teaching and presentation
skills in a supervised and collegial atmosphere, (3) prepare
graduate students to intergrate the demands of research,
teaching, and service in an academic career as well as
develop presentation skills needed for a wide range of
non-academic careers, and (4) provide certified recognition
for individuals who have worked to prepare themselves for
all aspects of future career responsibilities covered by the
CHET program.
