Kent State University and the University of Akron, about 20 miles apart, have established a Joint
Ph.D. in Nursing (JPDN) program. The JPDN is fully integrated at the academic program level, and a single curriculum has been developed. Courses are offered in alternate semesters at one or the other university: there are no parallel offerings.
The program has the complete cooperation of registrars, bursars,
library, and other support personnel (e.g. parking services) of both universities, with students having access to all the resources
available at both universities. The faculty who have graduate status from their home university are,
for the JPDN, a single faculty. Administrators are supported by their home university but are co-directors of the program. The JPDN budget
is jointly decided but each university separately supports the program. Student records are maintained at their university of choice, i.e. the university of record.
A single fee has been established for the program. While diplomas will be granted by
the university of record, the diploma will not show on it that the student is a graduate of
a joint doctoral program. The JPDN program has become a model for other joint programs in northeastern Ohio.
