For the past 4 years, the Graduate School has organized a weeklong
series of events and activities for new doctoral students designed to
help them make a successful transition to life at Yale and in New Haven.
The School-wide Orientation program has informational, practical, and
social components, and is designed to introduce students and their
families to staff, offices, and services throughout the University and
to make them welcome in their new hometown. Important elements include a
huge information fair, a formal convocation and welcome reception with
the President and Dean, student organization and community service
fairs, tours, talks, and group outings, and events for diverse
populations including students of color, women students, students with
spouses and/or children, and international students.
The Orientation program is planned by the Office of Student Life of
the McDougal Graduate Student Center, and features extensive involvement
by McDougal Graduate Fellows, current students who serve as Orientation
leaders. The Orientation succeeds in providing vital information in
user-friendly formats, making students feel comfortable in their new
University and City, and building the Graduate School community. The
weeklong Graduate School-wide Orientation Program is complemented by
discipline specific day-long Orientation events in each of the Ph.D.
degree-granting departments or programs, which introduce students to
specific academic requirements and policies, their faculty and fellow
students, and their libraries or laboratories.
The Orientation programs are held annually in August and September.
