Mentoring New Faculty Email Bulletin Service

Description
During the academic year approximately 45 bulletins were authored that covered three main areas: teaching tips, personnel information, and information aimed at helping faculty navigate the particulars of the university (e.g., travel expenditure policies). In general, we sent the navigational information earlier in the year and introduced information about personnel issues and teaching by midyear. Many of the e-mails contained external links to helpful websites (such as writing good multiple choice questions) and many of the e-mails were synchronized with important events (e.g. the e-mail regarding the rules governing retention timelines came in advance of the second year faculty’s fall reviews). Additionally, the teaching e-mails were aimed at faculty new to fulltime teaching. All of the e-mails were archived at a Blackboard website so that faculty could easily access the information at a later date  The messages can viewed by interested parties by visiting http://blackboard10.imt.uwm.edu/ to view samples of the e-mail bulletins. Login as "guest3" and use the password"guest3" - choose the course "UWL Fac Development." Overall, the e-mail bulletins appear to benefit faculty in three ways:
1.Providing timely accurate information in manageable chunks.
2. Conveying a sense that someone was thinking of their concerns.
3. Making the information specific to the university.

Some Teaching topics were Grading Theories Article, Letters of Recommendation (ethical and legal considerations) and What to Include in Syllabi & Why.  Two Navigation topics included were Advising (a series of pieces about advising students, and introduced faculty to college advisors, career services staff, and registrar staff) and Travel and Money Procedures.  Some Personnel topics covered were Merit Pay Procedures, Sample Tenure Timeline, and Promotion Guidelines
