Since 1995
the University of New Hampshire has been offering its doctoral students
an array of academic programs in College Teaching in support of its
Preparing Future Faculty program. A new collaborative network is
enabling UNH to strengthen its College Teaching curriculum and to
extend its reach by utilizing the talents of faculty from other
institutions with strengths in the scholarship of teaching.
The network, known as PACT (Partnership
for Academic Programs in College Teaching), involves the University of
Connecticut, the University of Maine, Howard University, Syracuse
University, the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, and the Tufts
University Department of Computer Science. PACT enables Ph.D. students
at all its member institutions to be come "teaching-ready"
before they assume their first academic positions.
Faculty from PACT institutions are now
collaborating in the delivery of existing courses, both in traditional
classroom settings and via the Internet. In addition, they are
participating in faculty clusters to design new courses focused on
teaching in specific fields and disciplines to augment UNH's selection
of such courses.
Since all courses are open to faculty as
well as graduate students, they offer doctoral students an opportunity
to engage with faculty in a shared inquiry into the processes of
teaching and learning. Asynchronous distance education in several of
the courses enriches the interaction by involving participants from a
wide variety of diverse institutions.
