What Can You Do with a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences?

Description

The “What Can You Do with a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences” seminar was started by a committee of four graduate students who wanted to learn more about alternative careers in science. The goal is to provide an informal, informative forum for grad students and post-docs to learn more about non-PI job opportunities in the field of biological and health sciences. Each presentation is a half-hour long, with the remaining half-hour dedicated to questions from the audience. Speakers briefly describe their field of work, the avenues that lead to positions within their fields, pay scales, competitiveness of the positions and what the daily activities are for their job.

UW training grants and individual departments sponsor the seminar each quarter. Through their generosity, we are able to not only fund the standard seminar expenses but also to cover travel arrangements and accommodations for occasional speakers not from the Seattle area. All speakers that are non-UW employees receive a small honorarium for their time and effort.

Our seminar has reached graduate students, post-doc fellows, and faculty members from over 20 departments on campus. Seminars are advertised via our web page (http://courses.washington.edu/phd), postings within the Health Sciences Buildings and by using departmental email listservs.
