Pieces of the Craft

Description

Several years ago, the University of Southern California School of International Relations faculty polled its graduate degree recipients (both MA and Ph.D.) for a prior ten year period and asked them to evaluate our training and placement efforts and recommend ways in which we could improve our efforts. As the result of this survey along with our own awareness and interest in improving the graduate programs, we devised "Pieces of the Craft" - or how to excel in graduate studies at the School of International Relations. The School of International Relations at the University of Southern California and the Burkle Center for International Studies at UCLA collaborate through their joint National Resource Center in International Studies (A Title VI Designation from the U.S. Department of Education) to host "Pieces of the Craft", a program designed to help doctoral students in the social sciences get the best advice and guidance for successful completion of the degree program and placement in academia or degree relevant positions in the public, non profit or private sector. A coordinator is appointed on each campus to schedule meetings such as: developing a time line for completing the Ph.D., how to write a winning grant, how to write a publishable paper, how to craft a dissertation proposal, the academic job market from the employer's perspective to the job talk, how to prepare for faculty interviews, off campus funding resources. This year we introduced three new workshops: putting together a teaching portfolio, interactive and case teaching methods training workshops, and alternatives to a career in academia. We are hosting a reception with chairs of academic departments in Southern California 2- and 4-year colleges to hear their recommendations to our Ph.D. students and candidates about finding tenure track positions, one and two year teaching assignments, and one course teaching opportunities in their programs.
