Preparing Future Professionals

Description

The ASU Graduate College has created a program designed to assist in the training of doctoral students seeking nonacademic careers. Preparing Future Professionals is a comprehensive professional development program that serves as a model for furthering graduate education and providing innovative student support. ASU accepts an ethical responsibility to prepare students to effectively pursue a wider range of professional opportunities than have been traditionally sought. The Graduate College works directly with various departments and graduate programs, university student support and administrative agencies, business and industry, and scholars and experts in the area of professional development for graduate students. This work is geared toward developing and implementing practical career/professional development services to Ph.D. students. Some of the activities for this program include the Brown Bag Forum and the program which has doctoral degreed individuals working in nonacademic settings meet with small groups of students to discuss career opportunities, cultural realities of nonacademic career life, and provide career tips and strategies. These are intra-disciplinary forums that aim to provide students with an opportunity to learn about career opportunities for doctoral graduates in their field of study.

Career Panel Series: These panels consist of doctoral alumni who have successfully entered non-academic careers. Panelists discuss their career paths, their positions, and their mentoring experiences. Some panels are cross disciplinary, aimed at exploring various nonacademic work settings, like corporate businesses and industries, or public sector organizations and agencies. Additionally, discipline specific panels are presented, comprised of doctoral degreed individuals from a particular discipline working in various nonacademic settings.
