For International Graduate
Students
Specifically intended for
non-native speakers of English, the Culture of Academic
Writing course provides an opportunity for international
graduate students to practice the writing conventions of
American academics and professionals in diverse disciplines.
The purpose of the course is to gain familiarity with
culturally-based academic and professional writing, which
can be as important to one's success as expertise in the
discipline itself.
During the course, students
analyze the structure and discourse conventions of numerous
written "products," and learn strategies to produce
appropriate texts. Students apply their new understanding of
audience expectations into an individualized, full-semester
writing project and their writing is analyzed to diagnose
strengths and weaknesses. Graduate students also have the
opportunity to develop strategies for long-term learning.
Upon completion of the course, graduate students, new
professionals, and new assistant professors will be able to
perform an array of writing tasks (such as research
proposals, technical reports, team reports, grant proposals,
abstracts, conference papers, memos, and critical reviews)
in ways that are culturally appropriate.
