Science Master's Degree

Description

The Science Master's is a professional M.S. degree in science or mathematics for students interested in a wider variety of career options than provided by means of currently available graduate programs in the sciences and mathematics. The goal of the program is to explore and bring into being a new type of professional Master's degree in the sciences that equips people for work outside academia, and to spur a significant national movement in this direction.

Open to bachelor's degree holders in the sciences, mathematics, or engineering, the new self-contained professional M.S. degree programs are designed to provide a professional platform for work in new and emerging fields; consulting (tech transfer); commerce (banking, insurance, and brokerage houses); patent and regulatory affairs; research management; and production, marketing, and capitalization of new science-based products.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has helped launch new M.S. degree programs at five universities having strong graduate programs in the sciences and mathematics. The Sloan programs comprise two years of post-graduate in-residence training in an emerging or interdisciplinary area, involving in most cases internships and some "cross-training" in basics for business and communications.
