The Virginia Consortium of
Engineering and Science Universities offers resident Ph.D.
and M.S. programs to residents of the Hampton Roads area;
NASA, Langley, and Newport News Shipbuilding employees; and
area businesses. The Consortium utilizes on-site
instruction, distance education, and research facilities in
the Hampton Roads area and is a cooperative program of
Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, William and Mary,
Old Dominion University, and organizations in the Hampton
Roads area.
To enter the program,
students declare themselves as VCES applicants and follow
the standard procedure of acceptance by a chosen university
graduate school. A course of study is then determined by the
student and his/her major professor, with the assistance of
the VCES Director and resident faculty. Applicants may
obtain support for their research through NASA, the member
universities, the Space Grant Consortium or other sources.
Students receive full resident credit by attending classes
locally, the same as on any member university campus, and
are able to take up to 50% of their courses from VCES
universities other than the one granting their degrees. The
VCES graduate program is offered during the day, late
afternoon, and evening to accommodate part-time students
with full-time jobs.
