The National Association of
Graduate-Professional Students (NAGPS) is conducting The
National Doctoral Program Survey to examine graduate student
satisfaction on a department-specific basis in all academic
fields. The survey will compile the experiences of current
and recent doctoral students, making those data publicly
available on the Internet.
The survey is funded by a
grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and is supported
by a growing list of professional societies, graduate
institutions, doctoral programs, and student associations.
The survey addresses a variety of aspects of graduate
education, including mentoring, career guidance, teaching
and professionalism, curricular issues, departmental
climate, time to degree, and overall student satisfaction.
Survey questions are based on recommendations made in
reports from the Association of American Universities and
the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Science,
Engineering, and Public Policy (COSEPUP).
The survey will compile the
experiences of doctoral students, present and past (any time
within the last five years) on a department-specific basis
to assess which programs are doing a great job of educating
and preparing Ph.D.s - and which need to improve.
Results will be made publicly available on the Internet in September
2001. The intent of the
project is to encourage a constructive dialogue between
graduate schools and students to improve educational
practices nationwide.
