FaST is a Department of
Energy (DOE) Office of Science funded program designed to
expand the capabilities of academic institutions that are
currently receiving less than 2 million dollars annually in
federal funding by providing their faculty with access to
the vast resources of the DOE laboratory system. This
one-year pilot program, beginning in February of 2000, has
two components: (1) Faculty Travel Grants, and (2) Faculty
and Student Teams research participation appointments.
The Faculty Travel Grant
provides opportunities for full time college and university
faculty to make short-term visits (up to two days) to
Department of Energy laboratories for the purpose of
exploring collaborative relationships with laboratory staff
and developing mechanisms for using laboratory resources in
educational programs at their home institutions.
Once faculty members have
completed a Faculty Travel Grant visit they are eligible to
apply to the FaST research participation component. Through
this component of the program, teams of college or
university faculty and selected undergraduate students (1
faculty member and 1 or 2 undergraduate students) spend the
summer at one of the Department's state-of-the-art National
Laboratories. The visiting faculty member and students work
with the resident laboratory scientist to co-direct the work
with the research team on an approved research plan. The
visiting faculty member agrees to bring one or two students
to work as a team with the resident laboratory scientist for
the ten weeks at the National Laboratory. Under certain
circumstances the visiting faculty may receive support to
continue to work with their teams back at their home
institutions. At the end of the summer research appointment,
the FaST faculty member may apply for continued support for
the following semester.
