Leadership Development Program

Description

To supplement graduate and professional students’ experience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Graduate School offers a professional development program. This program is predicated on the results of an internal study that indicates that there are five professional development skills — or "competencies" — that are needed by graduate students regardless of academic discipline: communication, leadership, teaching and instruction, professional adaptability, and self-awareness.

To provide graduate students with the opportunity to develop these five competencies, a series of professional development courses is now offered through the Graduate School at Carolina. These 1.0 credit-hour courses are for graduate or professional students only and address one or more of the five competencies. Each course is graded pass/fail and does not count toward degree requirements. These courses may also be audited with the permission of the instructor.  Examples of these courses include leadership, advanced leadership, career development, career exploration, oral presentation, college teaching, and preparing for the professorate.
