There is national
recognition of the serious nature of interpersonal conflicts
between graduate students and faculty and how these
conflicts affect attrition rates. Michigan State University
recognizes the fact that only about 50% of all doctoral
students will complete their graduate programs by offering a
workshop on "Effective Strategies for Setting Expectations
and Resolving Conflict for Graduate Students" in order to
address the problem in an early and on-going manner. The
program involves graduate students and faculty in workshop
sessions using video vignettes of pertinent graduate school
situations to stimulate discussion. It promotes
understandings of mutual expectations and responsibilities
by discussing "interest based" negotiation skills to cope
with the inevitable and largely productive atmosphere of
conflict in academe, and seeks consensus at the level of
departmental practice and policy. The Graduate School also
makes available a workbook outlining this information for
graduate students.
