The Intercampus Ph.D.
Program in Biology was established in 1981. The Liberal Arts
Rio Piedras Campus and Medical Sciences Campus of the
University of Puerto Rico are the partners in this endeavor.
The program optimizes the research capabilities of UPR and
incorporates the world class Institute of Neurobiology
(Medical Sciences) and the Institute for Tropical Ecosystems
Studies (Rio Piedras) to participate in student
training.
The multidisciplinary nature
of the program provides for four tracks in
Microbiology/Parasitology, Cellular/Molecular Biology,
Ecology, or Neurobiology. Only two core courses are required
and the remaining course requirements vary according to
track. The two courses required for all students are the
Doctoral Seminar, in which the student writes an NSF- or
NIH-type research proposal, and the Topics course, during
which 8 to 10 internationally recognized scientists lecture
for a week.
The Ecology track takes
advantage of the natural resources of the island, which
include the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. and the
Guernica dry forest. The emphasis of the Microbiology track
is on tropical environmental microbiology.
Cellular/Molecular Biology and Neurobiology have in common
the use of cellular and molecular research techniques. The
Neurobiology track includes neuroethology of tropical
invertebrates and computational neurobiology in addition to
neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuroanatomy.
