The Graduate Student
Research Symposium (GSRS) is an annual forum for the
exchange of ideas between graduate students in the
biomedical and biological science departments. While Yale's
bioscience disciplines are interrelated, students in the
different departments have rarely had the opportunity to
formally share and discuss their research. Thus, GSRS was
conceived by graduate students in 1996 to foster social and
academic cohesion among more than 500 students in twelve
rapidly growing and diversifying departments. Now entering
its fourth year, GSRS remains entirely student organized and
is the only large-scale annual gathering of the bioscience
community at Yale. Each year more than thirty graduate
students volunteer to organize GSRS, forming six committees
responsible for specific aspects of the symposium. The hard
work provided by these committees is coordinated by the GSRS
organizing committee, a group of eight to ten graduate
students. GSRS organization provides an important
opportunity to develop the leadership, administrative,
communications and promotional skills necessary for success
in academic science and many other careers.
