The Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington
University in St. Louis originated in 1973 as one of the 1st
interdisciplinary graduate programs in the nation. This
interdisciplinary approach is key to solving emerging biological and
biomedical problems in the "post-genomic" era.
Today the Division includes more than 300 faculty affiliated with 20
departments in the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Medicine.
The
program offers a paradigm for organizing graduate education
by creating a framework for faculty organization and
collective decision-making that crosses traditional
departmental or school boundaries. Each faculty member in
the Division holds dual citizenship: as a member of both a
department and an interdepartmental, interdisciplinary
graduate program. Like faculty, students select their program based on their own interests.
Movement of students between programs is permitted in order
to allow students to follow their intellectual interests.
The Division supplies each program with administrative
support, assists in setting uniform policies, and provides
senior administrators to help advise and oversee three
functions: program and student affairs, recruitment of
students, and finances.
