Partnership for Research in Inquiry-Based Math, Science, and Engineering Education (PRIME)

Description

PRIME (Partnership for Research in Inquiry-Based Math, Science, and Engineering Education) is a National Science Foundation fellowship program for graduate students in Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Washington. Each year, for three consecutive years (beginning in the year 2000), twelve UW graduate students will be selected as PRIME Fellows to work in partnership with middle school teachers in the math, science, and engineering disciplines. The focus of the NSF-funded proposal is inquiry-based learning in MSE education in middle school settings with diverse student and teacher populations. PRIME's major goals are to enhance learning among middle school students, teachers, and Fellows in MSE; enhance diversity in the workforce; and develop a cadre of scientists and engineers who will enter the workforce ready, willing and able to continuously improve the quality of K-12 education. PRIME is a partnership between five Seattle-area school districts, three National Science Foundation Local Systemic Initiatives, 15 UW academic departments, 10 departments in the College of Engineering, College of Education faculty, the Center for Instructional Development and Research, the Office of Educational Assessment, and four UW. diversity programs.
