The SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral
Program (JDP) represents a unique setting for a Ph.D.
training program in Clinical Psychology The program is
jointly run by a cooperative agreement between the
Department of Psychology at San Diego State University and
the Department of Psychiatry at the University of
California, San Diego. The program was one of the first to
develop specialization tracks (Neuropsychology, Health
Psychology, and Experimental Psychopathology) which offer
training in three important areas for the future. This has
lead to far greater employment opportunities for the
program's doctoral students, many of whom have obtained
excellent academic and research positions.
The JDP is able to offer a
wide range of both research and clinical training
opportunities that are often unavailable through most
traditional programs. For example, doctoral students are
exposed to patients from the UCSD Medical School's VA
hospital and Medical Center, who are typically quite
different from patients seen at the more traditional SDSU
Psychology Clinic. Students are also able to work in faculty
research labs which provide access to such things as MRI
scans, sleep monitoring, and other equipment or practices
that are not available at SDSU. In addition, the fact that
dissertation committees typically contain both Ph.D.s and
MDs provides an excellent collaborative experience for
students early in their careers.
