Women in Science and Engineering

Description

The University of Washington's Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) is an organization designed to increase the recruitment and retention of women of all ethnic backgrounds in science and engineering (S & E), and to create an academic and social climate at the UW which is conducive to both men and women in S&E at the undergraduate and graduate levels. To attain these goals, the specific objectives of WISE are to build a collaborative and learner-centered environment for women in S&E; deliver recruitment, retention, and workforce preparation programs; and conduct research studies related to women in S&E.

WISE provides both academic and support programs which include Tutoring, Professional Mentoring, Peer Mentoring, Advising, Undergraduate Retention Interventions, and a Graduate Program for the recruitment and retention of graduate students. All programs are evaluated annually, documentation on each program is maintained, and a longitudinal database tracks undergraduate students from their entry through graduation. (WISE) recently received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.
