The Executive Doctor of
Management (EDM) Program is an innovative three-year
doctoral program at the Weatherhead School of Management at
Case Western Reserve University. The program accepts
approximately eighteen senior professionals each year from
business, the non-profit sector, and governmental
organizations. The EDM, which requires a master's degree, is
structured so that participants come to Case Western Reserve
University for intensive residencies for several days every
three weeks. Between residency sessions, e-mail is utilized
for delivering assignments, participating in discussions,
and handling administrative tasks.
The primary goal of the
program is to develop the role of the practitioner-scholar
in society by providing the opportunity for advanced study
to persons seeking intellectual stimulation and achievement
through means other than a traditional Ph.D. program. The
average participant is 46-47 years old, and individuals
participate from all over the United States and, to some
degree, from overseas. The program design makes it possible
for organizational leaders to study at the doctoral level
without leaving their full-time positions. The Weatherhead
school of Management has found that there are numerous
individuals who seek such a program in order to advance and
stimulate their intellectual growth at a point in their
careers in which they have achieved substantial leadership
responsibilities.
The program maintains a
consistent focus on economic, social, political, and
technological issues from an international or global
perspective, with the majority of the coursework grounded in
the social sciences and the humanities. For example, the
required curriculum includes seminars on such topics as,
"Culture and World Politics," "Theory and Problems of
Collective Action," "Comparative Approaches to Social
Problem Solving," and "Technology and Social Systems
Design." Members of the teaching faculty are drawn from Arts
and Sciences, the Law School, the CWRU Center for
Professional Ethics, and the School of Social Work, in
addition to the Management School. As with any doctoral
program, EDM participants have numerous opportunities to
design independent projects and determine the focus of their
learning experiences. In the third year, participants focus
their inquiries on an applied problem, seeking to make
policy contributions as well as contributions to the
community of scholars.
