Virginia Tech's expansion of
its research space in Alexandria is a response to the
potential of Northern Virginia and Washington D.C.
organizations who need state-of-the-art research in the
areas of communications, computing, energy, environment,
materials, management systems, and transportation. Research
has shown that corporations that work closely with Research
I universities have productivity increases on the order of
60%. Because the majority of Virginia's emerging industry is
in the Northern Virginia area, we believe the expansion of
its research space in Alexandria will be mutually beneficial
to all. The Alexandria Research Institute offers increased
contact between research faculty, staff, and students
working on projects with corporate and government sponsors.
Collaboration among the faculty extends to team-teaching
graduate engineering courses at the present Northern
Virginia Center where Virginia Tech enrolls 1500+ graduate
students in many disciplines, with 450 of those students
studying engineering at the M.S. level. The goal of the
Alexandria Research Institute is to host 40-50 faculty and
100 Ph.D. students from the U.S. and around the world. Each
foreign university would send 2-3 faculty and 3-5 students
each year to study together in the Alexandria Research
Institute.
