North Carolina State
University has amended its main campus with a 1,000 acre
Centennial Campus designed to integrate "university,
corporate and government research and development facilities
and business incubators, with an exciting town center and
hotel, upscale housing, and recreational amenities." All
persons working on this developing campus are given
University Affiliate Status to promote research, workforce
and training partnerships between academia and industry.
This forward-looking environment hopes to allow improved
technology transfer and career opportunities by offering
graduate student internships, co-op work opportunities, and
customized human resource development programs. It brings
faculty and industry into consultation relationships and
allows industry opportunities to influence Ph.D. training.
Participants are granted access to technicians, equipment,
and library and other university facilities. Primary areas
of research include advanced materials, biotechnology,
veterinary medicine, advanced communications technologies,
environmental technologies, and manufacturing process
engineering.
