The History in the Community
Program established the team research seminar as a central
element of UCSB's Graduate Program in Public Historical
Studies. All incoming public history students enroll in the
required 2-3 quarter seminar. All seminar members focus on
one topic, which is commissioned by a client from the
community. The client funds both the research project (often
with stipends to the students) and its subsequent
publication. Students write a 30-40 page scholarly research
paper on one of the topic's segments, and the faculty
director and one or two students serve as editors to
integrate all segments into one coherent volume ready for
publication. Participation benefits students by developing
their research, writing, communication, and teamwork skills;
and by providing them with a publication and a public forum
in which to present their work. The stipend reinforces the
idea that, as trained professionals who provide valuable
services, historians deserve adequate compensation for their
work. Finally, the program benefits the community by
developing a scholarly body of historical research which can
inform decision-making.
