Title

Formal Defense of the Dissertation Proposal

Description

In the Information and Decision Sciences Department at the Carlson School of Management, the dissertation committee holds a formal defense as soon as the doctoral student has developed a research proposal. This practice allows the doctoral students and their proposed dissertation committees to interact in suggesting improvements, considering risky approaches, and trimming the scope of the research if desirable. This formal process has been the single most important factor in improving quality of research and encouraging timely completion of the Ph.D.
