The University of
California, like other higher education institutions,
currently faces new challenges in the recruitment and
retention of a diverse graduate student body, especially
underrepresented minorities and women in some fields.
Administrators, faculty, graduate students, staff, community
leaders and University of California-Los Angeles
assigned legislators are invited to a one-day conference
titled, "Achieving Graduate Student Diversity: Who is
responsible? What works and what doesn't?" This is the
second University of California conference to discuss ways
in which to rethink and restructure policies and programs on
achieving graduate student diversity. To the question, "Who
is responsible?" the conference will offer the reply
"everybody" and advance strategies for all sectors of the
academy and community on which to collaborate. In response
to "What works and what doesn't?" the conference will seek
to identify and share best and promising practices of
institutions, departments, programs, and individuals as
tools to enhance access and equity in graduate and
professional programs. The conference will bring together
experts from across the University of California system and
other universities, colleges, and national organizations;
and give attention to student voices and perspectives. The
conference is sponsored by the UCLA Graduate Division in
cooperation with the University of California Council of
Graduate Deans.
