Doctoral Portfolio Program

Description

The Office of Graduate Studies at UT-Austin offers doctoral students the opportunity to obtain credentials in a cross-disciplinary academic area of inquiry in concurrence with pursuing their Ph.D. degree. Doctoral Portfolio Programs normally consist of four thematically related, doctoral-level courses from a variety of pre-determined disciplines/programs offered by at least two departments outside the student's home program. In addition, the student is often required to prepare a scholarly essay to be presented at a research colloquium. At the time of graduation, a student's transcript reflects both receipt of the doctoral degree and certification in the completed doctoral portfolio program. One of the reasons for developing the concept of a portfolio program was to enrich the research experience and expand the scholarly credentials of doctoral students. It is hoped that the Portfolio Certificate might also increase the new Ph.D.'s marketability, as well as increase the breadth of his or her training.
