Career Services for the Microbiological Sciences

Description

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) plays an important role in preparing graduate students in the microbiological sciences. ASM publishes and disseminates career materials, employment surveys, and student guides on surviving graduate education. In April 1996, the Society published the results of a two-year, nationwide study of current employment and future personnel needs in the microbiological sciences. In addition, the Society disseminates 5,000 copies of its career booklet each year. Over the past two decades, the Society has sponsored students from underrepresented groups to pursue graduate studies in the microbiological sciences. Since 1996, the Society, in cooperation with the National Centers for Infectious Diseases, has sponsored approximately 8 individuals in a two-year post-doctoral program in infectious diseases. Finally, the Society offers graduate students participation in its job placement service and sponsors sessions on career services, mentoring, financing your graduate education, communications, management, grantsmanship, and scientific writing.
