Two complementary programs
aimed at enhancing future employment for Ph.D. physicists,
scientists, and engineers were initiated in 1996 at the City
University of New York. The program was funded by a grant
from the National Science Foundation. The first project was
a local pilot program that consisted of four supplementary
mini-courses titled "Scientific Career Management;"
"Communication and Multimedia Skills;" "Computer Skills Used
in the Work Place;" and "The Business and Economics of
Science and Technology." The courses were team-taught with a
scientist and a faculty member from the Baruch School of
Business at CUNY. The second project was an outreach program
in which the principal investigator and others scheduled a
site visit to evaluate the career guidance, coursework, and
environment at various physics and science departments. The
site visits included colloquia on employment situations plus
meetings with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students.
Written critiques with suggestions were prepared for the
visited departments.
