ScienceWorks: Involvement of Students in Outreach and Research

Description

ScienceWorks, a science and engineering (S&E) outreach program involving graduate students, centralizes resources for graduate student-related issues. Nine students per year hold part-time appointments to develop outreach materials and graduate student programs. Other graduate students, faculty, staff and undergraduates work on a volunteer basis. Graduate students develop skills such as communicating the importance of S & E to non-scientists, learning the fundamentals of grant writing, improving oral communication, and working with the media. A weekly journal club allows the improvement of oral communication skills by providing a forum for constructive feedback. A professional development seminar includes topics such as job hunting skills (writing the vita or resume, interviewing), professional skills (writing papers and proposals, presenting technical talks) and outreach-related topics.
