The Society for Industrial
and Applied Mathematics sponsored a committee of 17 applied
mathematicians from industry, government, and academia who
produced a report on "Mathematics in Industry." The report
tallies the concerns of several hundred recent graduate
degree holders working in nonacademic jobs. It examines the
roles of mathematics inside and outside the academy, the
working environment of mathematicians, and the value of
graduate training for a career in mathematics. Crisis in the
job market and U.S. funding agency attention to applied
mathematics prompted attention to career issues of the
discipline. Particular attention was placed on developing
interdisciplinary programs, teaching communication skills,
and creating links with industry.
