Graduate School Professional Development Program

Description

The Graduate School's Professional Development Program offers seminars, workshops, and courses to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows designed to help them develop communication and other career-enhancing skills. Subjects range from improving writing and presentations to locating funding sources and making the transition from student to career professional. "Charting an Ethical Course: A Seminar for New Students" is offered every Fall quarter. Topics include ethical issues in the conduct of research, protections of human and animal subjects, and paraphrase vs. plagiarism. A two-hour session titled "Staying Afloat Writing a Thesis or Dissertation" is offered every term. Topics include choosing and working with your committee, and tips for successful defense and completion of dissertations. The large international graduate student population also benefits from courses designed to help them master English communication skills.
