The University of Kentucky
has developed a number of joint Ph.D. programs that involve
the collaboration of two or more public universities in
Kentucky. These program combine the research, expertise of
the faculty at the collaborating institutions and use
appropriate distance learning technology whenever possible.
In 1997, the first joint Ph.D. in Social Work in the country
was started by the University of Kentucky and the University
of Louisville. Students enroll at one of the two
universities, but take classes from faculty at both
institutions and have their doctoral research directed by a
committee composed of faculty from both
universities.
Currently, a second joint
Ph.D. program has been approved by the participating
universities (University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky
University, Western Kentucky University, and Murray State
University) and is waiting final approval by the Council of
Post-Secondary Education. This program is in Rehabilitation
Sciences, which includes the fields of Occupational Therapy,
Physical Therapy, and Communication Disorders. A third joint
program -- in Clinical Laboratory Sciences -- between the
University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville is
in the planning stages.
