Humanities Out There
(H.O.T.) draws upon the ArtsBridge model to create a
humanities outreach program involving UCI and local K-12
schools, particularly in the under-served community of Santa
Ana. UCI faculty participate in the program as advisors and
mentors for UCI graduate and undergraduate students, who
work as teachers and tutors in the local schools; the K-12
teachers are partners in the process. The program aims to
stimulate an interest in learning and higher education among
students from underserved groups. It uses the intellectually
challenging content of humanistic inquiry--such as
mythological traditions, primary works of art and
literature, historical documents, and philosophical
problems--to develop pre-college skills and build a literacy
triangle that combines basic literacy (reading and writing)
with cultural literacy (knowledge of Western civilization)
and multicultural literacy (informed awareness of different
traditions).
H.O.T. workshops are
designed and taught by advanced graduate students in the
humanities with supervision from UCI faculty. Graduate
students have the opportunity to design and lead workshops
on focused topics, interacting with participating teachers
and training a team of undergraduate tutors in the subject
area and in teaching techniques. The team visits a K-12
classroom once a week for five weeks, where the workshop
idea is investigated and explored with young students. The
classroom teacher, actively collaborating with the UCI team,
provides context, guiding the assignment and supporting it
with follow-up exercises and art projects. In its first two
years, H.O.T. ran more than 60 five-week workshops, with
enthusiastic response from the community and university
participants. H.O.T. provides participating graduate
students with invaluable experience in administration,
curricular design, service-learning supervision, and
community outreach. Graduate students have already used
H.O.T. in order to build similar outreach programs at other
campuses, or to work toward new careers in secondary
education, publishing, administration, and community
learning.
