The Doctoral Proseminar

Description

Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GLSIS) has been revising its doctoral program over a number of years. As part of this process, the Doctoral Proseminar was developed to explore and address some of the difficulties that new students encounter as they struggle to adapt to Doctoral study. The Doctoral Proseminar is a Doctoral-level course offered each semester; and the program requires that each student complete a minimum of two Proseminar courses.

The basic format alternates each week between a talk followed by group discussion, and a reading group. The talks, based on the presenters' research projects, are given by members of GSLIS faculty, other campus faculty, or doctoral students. (All doctoral students are expected to attend the talks regardless of whether they are registered for the course; and faculty are strongly encouraged to attend.) Topics include introducing new doctoral students to the process of doctoral study, learning to cope with interdisciplinarity, choosing a research topic, and helping international students adjust to a different social and learning culture. The reading groups consist of small group discussions and exercises based on selected core readings. The readings introduce students to a wide range of research practices and evolving research understanding to supplement their hands-on experience as research assistants. Group exercises provide graduate students with the opportunity to share insights, explore approaches to brainstorming, and apply the readings to new research contexts.
