Doctoral Student Orientation

Description

UNC-Chapel Hill recently initiated a campus-wide orientation for incoming doctoral and master's students. The orientation dovetailed with orientation programs conducted by specific schools/departments and consisted of two general parts. First, students had the opportunity to attend different sessions (in a conference-like format) that were relevant to all incoming graduate students. Topics included obtaining on-going funding, academic resources on campus, and how to achieve in-state residency for tuition purposes. The second part gave students the opportunity to explore a Student Services Information Fair. Following the format of an undergraduate college fair, tables in a large auditorium were staffed by representatives from various student service offices on campus, as well as representatives from various student organizations that could be of interest to incoming students. Organizations represented included the graduate student government and organizations for marginalized students.
